What exactly is the Shakesbeer Series? What should I expect?

Our current slate of programming, the Shakesbeer Bar Reading Series, is a fast-paced process with a very limited rehearsal schedule (one zoom, one in-person) balanced by having a script in hand during performance. There is no fourth wall to maintain, as performers will weave among restaurant patrons and staff to deliver a raucous and unique show experience. Familiarity with Shakespearean verse and improvisational experience are preferred though by no means required.

I am not available for all the show dates listed. Should I still audition?

Hell yeah! Each Shakesbeer show is independent of the others, so being in one does not require participation in any others. If you have an existing conflict you are already aware of, simply mark that down in the appropriate place on the audition form and we will contact you only for the shows you CAN do.

 

What is the time commitment for each show?

Each show in the Shakesbeer series is one-night-only, and we are expecting to do one Zoom rehearsal about a week before the performance, and one in-person rehearsal the weekend just before the Monday show. Scripts will be in-hand during the performance, so memorization is not required, but performers should be very familiar with their parts to facilitate their performance.

When is the cutoff for auditions?

There is no firm cutoff for general auditions, but for consideration for our first show, Much Ado About Nothing, you should submit on or prior to August 23rd. Generally, we will also cast other shows about a month out from the performance date.

Do I have to drink at the Shakesbeer series? Is anyone forced to drink before the show begins?

No! We encourage responsible habits, and for some people that means abstaining entirely. We are working on specialty cocktails and mocktails for each show so that everyone can be part of the fun regardless of their personal preferences.

What is the compensation for these shows?

Performers will be paid a percentage of the donations from each show. This will likely be a very small amount, though food will also be provided as a token of our appreciation.

Absolutely not, and it never will be. We take pride in our work and the artists we work with.
